Having worked for several years in tech, I understand the allure of it. It all starts with an idea, something life altering or disruptive. Then there's work, and plenty of it. The process of turning an idea into a business requires grit and gumption, and sometimes the odds seem insurmountable. But eventually it all pays off. Because there's an endgame. Companies either close their doors and move on to the next idea, or they keep going, and they keep growing.

For the lucky few that "cross the chasm" into the mainstream, there is an ultimate reward: going public. And doing so is a portent of even greater success to come. For what was once an idea is now realized, not just by the owner, or by their employees, but by an entire set of people eager to see that idea succeed. A milestone of entrepreneurial success, the IPO helps not just that one idea succeed, but all the ones that come after it. Because capital turns entrepreneurs into investors, ready to fund the next onset of ideas.
