Editorial Board Member: Shivani Patel

Shivani Patel joined the American Bar

Association (ABA) at the start of 2025

as a member of the Tort Trial and Insur-

ance Practice Section (TIPS), serving on the

editorial board of The Brief and on the Cannabis

Law and Policy Committee.

Born and raised in Gurnee, Illinois—about

40 miles north of downtown Chicago and

about a mile away from Six Flags—Shivani

grew up enjoying outdoor activities, crafts,

reading, and music. She played volleyball

throughout middle school and high school,

serving as captain during her junior and

senior years. After graduating high school,

she attended the University of Illinois at

Urbana–Champaign. Motivated by a growing interest in law

and public policy, Shivani worked during college as the com-

munity advisory panel legislative aide for State Representative

Carol Ammons. She graduated with a bachelor of arts in

political science, a minor in global marketing, and a con-

centration in law and power. Following graduation, Shivani

worked as a paralegal for several years, gaining experience in

supporting complex mass tort matters, litigation, premises

liability, product liability cases, and real estate–related work.

These early roles strengthened her analytical abilities and

armed her interest in work that sits at the intersection of

law, research, and problem-solving.

Shivani began her career in risk assessment consulting in

2021 at RHP Risk Management, based in Chicago, Illinois.

From the start, she knew she had found work

that truly aligned with her professional passions:

the legal world, reading and research, and

learning something new every day. As a senior

associate, Shivani supports senior technical sta

by extracting, analyzing, and synthesizing com-

plex historical and scientific research and data.

RHP Risk Management is an environmental

and occupational consulting firm composed of

scientists and public-health professionals whose

work spans toxicology, industrial hygiene,

exposure science, and human-health risk

assessment. In her role, Shivani focuses on legal

and regulatory risk, assisting clients who must

navigate complex exposures, environmental

hazards, and compliance demands. RHP partners with private

industry, governmental entities, academia, trade associations,

and community organizations to help them identify, evaluate,

and manage health and safety risks in workplaces and built

environments.

Outside of the oce, Shivani enjoys going to Solidcore,

making matcha lattes, reading, and listening to true crime

podcasts. She lives in the Chicago area with her fiancé, Neil,

whom she met five years ago on St. Patrick’s Day. She spends

most weekends with her family and friends, exploring the

incredible food scene the city has to oer. Shivani may be
