EDITORIAL
Welcome to the first issue of Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice: An Interdisciplinary
Journal. This new journal represents the combined efforts of members of the juvenile
justice section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and Sage Publications. The
fundamental goal of this journal is to provide an academic outlet for empirical research and
writing on the important subjects of youth violence and juvenile justice. Although many
academic journals in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, social work, education, law,
and other related disciplines routinely publish articles on youth violence and juvenile
justice, we feel that this is the first journal specifically devoted to these topics. The
fundamental goal of this journal is to be the preeminent source for dissemination of
academic and practitioner information and research on youth violence and juvenile justice.
Accomplishing this goal is made even more difficult by the very fact that so many academic
disciplines have a vested interest in these subjects. In addition, as anyone who has worked
or researched the juvenile justice system will attest, the sheer number of academics,
practitioners, organizations, and other actors involved in juvenile justice is enormous. To
this end, rather than attempting to carve out a small niche in the fields of youth violence and
juvenile justice, we will embrace the diversity of interests in these areas and attempt to
represent these interests in the pages of this journal. If the goal of being the preeminent
journal in youth violence and juvenile justice is possible, it can only be accomplished by
representing all of the diversity of interests currently present in the system. We are fortunate
to have representation from a variety of perspectives and disciplines on our editorial board.
