Clark Wright Jr., a lawyer hired by the city of Wilson to fight the opening of a new Sanderson Farms poultry plant in neighboring Nash County. The plant, which would create 1,100 jobs, would attract chicken farms, but Wilson worries that poultry poop--loaded with nitrogen and phosphorus--would further contaminate its nutrient-rich watershed.

A subsidiary of Madrid-based Iberdrola Renovables SA, which claims to be the world's top wind-energy producer, won approval from the N.C. Utilities Commission for a project that could power 55,000-70,000 homes. It needs additional permits, but construction could begin by year-end. The site is in a remote section known as The Desert.

PEMBROKE--Steven Roberts Original Desserts says it will open a 100,000-square-foot bakery here in July. The Denver-based company plans to employ 100 initially and add 200 within three years. It and its Ticklebelly Desserts subsidiary make sweets sold in restaurants and hotels.
