A current image posted on the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) Earth Observatory Website, processed from data generated by NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites shows a pronounced ring of brown nearly encircling Lake Victoria (Africa) completely. The brown areas show regions that are drier than they were between 2000 and 2004.

It's a vivid illustration of the multi-year drought responsible for a disastrous harvest this year creating a humanitarian crisis in Uganda.

The drought has also been blamed for a spike in inflation, according to a March 31, 2005 report published by New Vision (Kampala). The rate of inflation rose from 9 percent in February 2005...
