Increasing pressure on water levels in the United States is the next major bottleneck in America's future. This, in essence, is the argument that Midkiff makes in this compellingly detailed volume, where he first presents water outcomes through the lens of disputes, scarcity and details of current "water wars." He then analyses these outcomes via issues currently surrounding water management such as privatization, public-private partnerships and environmental impact. He sums up with an evaluation of the feasibility of technical responses to water management, including desalination plants, pipelines, aquifers, groundwater pumping and towed icebergs. Appended to each chapter is a synopsis on "citizen reactions" to the above issues, where Midkiff recommends a combination of home remedies and collective action to better involve American citizens in managing domestic water resources.
