For the last several centuries, the workplace has been using extrinsic motivation, rewarding for "good" behavior and punishing for "bad" behavior. Author Daniel Pink claims that in today's workplace, motivation should be intrinsic. He outlines three elements to maximizing intrinsic motivation: autonomy, mastery and purpose.

Autonomy

Giving employees autonomy means allowing them to have personal control over four specific areas: task, time, technique and team. Task involves the ability to choose not only what you are going to work on, but how you would like to do it. The second area, time, is the ability to decide how and when to use your time. Technique is the ability to work the way you want to work. The fourth area, team, is the ability to choose your own team you work with on a daily basis.
