Moldova, one of Europe's poorest countries, is surrounded on three sides by Ukraine. Russia's most recent invasion of Ukraine a year ago has driven some 750,000 refugees into Moldova (as of February, roughly 110,000 have stayed). The sudden influx of new inhabitants, many without savings or the essentials they left behind, puts enormous pressure on the country's already-strained public services.
