How long have Dr. James "Jim" H. Donnelly Jr. and Dr. Laird Landon been teaching at the ABA School of Bank Marketing and Management?

It's been so long, Donnelly says, that some of today's students tell him that he taught not only their boss--but their boss's boss as well.

It's been so long, Landon says, that when he first started teaching, women made up less than 10 percent of the students (today they make up about two-thirds).

This June, when school opens on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder, Donnelly and Laird will celebrate their 30th anniversary of participation with the school. Donnelly currently serves as the school's academic dean, a position he has held for the last 12 years. Laird teaches a class in commercial sales management.

The school (formerly known as the BMA School of Bank Marketing) teaches the specialty of bank marketing to financial institution professionals. It is the nation's only school that teaches that specialty. The school also provides generalized management training outside of marketing "to meet the continuing career needs of banking professionals." Classes are held for nine days over a two-year cycle. The school has existed for more than 50 years and has been located at the University of Colorado for the last 31 years.

Donnelly, who has been the Thomas C. Simons Professor of Business at the University of Kentucky for the last 33 years, says he was teaching a marketing class at the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking in 1971 when he received an invitation to act as a teaching "resource" for bankers who were presenting bank...
