DOD announces $4.8M
for chronic pain research
The Defense Department (DOD) recently
announced $4.8 million in funding for the FY20
Chronic Pain Management Research Program
Translational Research Award (CPMRP TRA) to
support translational research that will accelerate
the movement of evidence-based ideas in chronic
pain management research into clinical applica-
tions, such as health care products, technologies,
clinical practice guidelines and/or models of care.
According to the announcement, researchers will
be required to explain how the proposed work will
inform the development, renement and/or revision
of existing standards of care, recommendations or
guidelines for managing chronic pain.
DOD said researchers must address one or both
of the following FY20 CPMRP TRA focus areas:
• Implementation Science—for evidence-based,
efcacious interventions to manage chronic pain.
° Unique barriers for delivery of comple-
mentary and integrative health therapies
and models of care in military populations
and environments, including at-risk
subpopulations
° Self-management and service-of-care models
Comparative Effectiveness—for evidence-based,
efcacious interventions to manage chronic pain.
° Multimodal and combination therapies
° Chronic pain and its bidirectional interac-
tions with comorbidities (e.g., polytrauma
triad, suicidal thoughts and behaviors,
substance abuse, etc.)
Other encouraged but not required approaches
include pain informatics, pragmatic approaches,
patient expectations, and preference and goals of
treatment at point of care, DOD said.
Eligibility is open to all qualied governments,
organizations and individuals. Two awards are
expected, with a maximum amount of $1.4 million.
Applicants must submit a pre-application by Aug.
7, 2020, DOD said, and proposals are due Nov. 6, 2020.
