Supporting Diverse and First-Generation Law Students in the Wake of Students for Fair Admissions

Mentorship plays a crucial role in the success of diverse and first-generation law students in the legal profession. A mentor's presence can make the difference between these students feeling adrift in a confusing system and thriving within it. Following the Supreme Court's Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President &Fellows of Harv. Coll. decision, which ended affirmative action in higher education admissions, mentorship has become even more crucial.^[1] Mentorship ensures that underrepresented students continue to have opportunities and pathways for success in the legal profession.^[2]

For many aspiring law students — especially those from marginalized backgrounds — the path to law school is daunting due to a lack of resources and guidance. Without early exposure to the legal field, first-generation and diverse students often struggle to navigate the admissions process. Mentors can make navigating this process easier by providing advice on drafting personal statements, securing strong letters of recommendation, and weighing the factors involved in choosing a law school.
