Diversifying in Anderson. A logistics-related newcomer and a plastics manufacturer's expansion are signaling employment diversification in Madison County, where Anderson's Delco Remy America, Delphi Automotive Systems and Guide Corp. have long dominated.

Delco Remy has ceased manufacturing, now employing just 400 in research and development; Delphi continues cutting jobs through attrition; and Guide remains the top employer, with about 2,100 making automotive lighting systems.

Carter Express is the newcomer, returning after a several-year absence to build a new truck-maintenance facility. "We're interested in attracting logistics, so having a truck-maintenance facility will be very helpful," says John Hagen, executive director of the Corporation for Economic Development.
