Larry Morandi, NCSL'S director of state policy research, recently visited New Jersey, accompanied by Nevada Senator Debbie Smith (D), president-elect of NCSL. Morandi writes:

It was an interesting time to be in New Jersey. The state--one of only four that holds elections in odd-numbered years-has a new Assembly speaker, Vincent Prieto (D). Senator Smith and I had the privilege of spending some time with Prieto, a consensusbuilder who's brought a lot of energy to the Assembly. He came to this country with his mother when he was 10 and is the second Cuban-American to serve as New Jersey speaker in the past 12 years.
