Caroline Kennedy, who served as Japan's first female U.S. ambassador from 2013 to 2017, was elected to the Boeing Company board of directors and will serve on the audit and finance committees.

"Ambassador Kennedy brings to the Boeing board professional, diplomatic and global perspectives that are highly valued in our rapidly evolving and increasingly competitive global business environment," said Boeing chairman, president and CEO Dennis Muilenburg in a statement. "Her diversity of experience and accompanying insights will broaden and strengthen our board in its deliberative and oversight roles for the company."

Kennedy, the daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline B. Onassis, is an attorney, writer and a member of the New York and Washington, D.C., bar associations.

She co-wrote two books on civil liberties, and is the editor of multiple New York Times best-selling books on constitutional law, American history, politics and poetry. She is the president and director of The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and a member of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award Committee.

She has been an advocate for getting more women in the science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and at a panel discussion on technology during her tenure as Japan's Ambassador she said: "This is an exciting time to be a student, and particularly a female student interested in science, technology, engineering, and math."

She is an adviser to the Harvard Institute of Politics, a living memorial to her father, and a member of the boards of directors of the Commission on Presidential Debates, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, honorary chairman of the American Ballet Theatre, and is a trustee of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.-Barbara Wenger
