3M produces products for the office, health care, highway safety, and abrasives and adhesives markets. Revenues are $30 billion.

Plant is the former chairman, president and CEO of TRW Automotive. He is a director of Masco Corp., Gates Corp., and Jabil Circuit Corp. Schmidt is the former EVP and CFO of Spirit Aerosystems Holdings Inc. He previously was EVP and CFO of Goodrich Corp. Also joining the Alcoa board is Sean Mahoney, a private investor and former partner at Goldman Sachs. The three new directors join the board with the approval of Elliott Management, a significant investor in Alcoa.

Also joining the board is Eric Semler, president and founder of TCS Capital Management LLC. Founded in 2001, it has become one of the largest independent funds focused on media and communications equities. TCS reached an agreement with the company that provides for two additional directors to join the board and for TCF to increase its ownership stake.
