The Maryland Statehouse in Annapolis is the oldest capitol still in legislative use, dating back to 1772. It is the only statehouse that has also served as the nation's capitol and has hosted some significant events in U.S. history. Most notably, George Washington appeared before Congress here in December 1783 to resign as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.
