Baby Diaper Service's business bottomed out in the '70s, but thanks to growing concern for the environment, things are changing.

Sales for the Greensboro diaper company are up 40 percent over last year, as parents look for alternatives to disposable plastic diapers, which take up dwindling landfill space.

The business is a family affair headed by Graham Morgan, 66, who started the service after being discharged from the Air Force in 1946. He got the idea from his wife, Juanita, who was expecting. She was impressed that her cousin in Baltimore could get diapers delivered, a service that wasn't available in High Point, where the Morgans were living. With a used truck, they started one that served Thomasville and Randolph County as-well as High Point. "I was flying airplanes one week and driving a diaper truck the next," Morgan says.

Baby Diaper Service expanded into Raleigh, Winston-Salem and Danville, Va., by buying companies whose owners were retiring. In 1957, Morgan moved his company to Greensboro, and by the mid-'60s, it was one of the largest diaper services in the state.

But then came the disposable diaper and the baby bust - a drop in childbirths during the late '60s and early 70s. By the 80s, business picked up again as baby boomers were having their own...
