U.S. deputy archivist retires; successor named.

Lewis Bellardo, deputy archivist and chief of staff at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) since 1995, retired December 31, 2007. U.S. Archivist Allen Weinstein has named Adrienne C. Thomas to succeed Bellardo.

According to a press release, Bellardo led the visionary redesign of NARA's records management program for the entire federal government and was instrumental in establishing and guiding the current Electronic Records Archives (ERA) program. He also had represented the National Archives externally, led the interagency Electronic Records Work Group, served on the Interagency Committee on Government Information, and participated in the Council of Chief Information Officers of the Federal Government.

Bellardo said he plans to continue advising NARA on projects on a part-time basis.
