AFTER THE interruption of the constitutional democratic order in Honduras on June 28, the GAS has implemented various mechanisms with the goal of promoting the recovery of the institutional process of this Central American country and ensuring compliance with the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

Shortly after its occurrence, the 37th Extraordinary General Assembly strongly condemned the coup against the government of Honduras, as well as the arbitrary detention of President Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales and his expulsion from the country.

The resolution issued by the highest political body of the GAS also stated that none of the 33 member states of the Organization would recognize a government that came from the rupture of the constitutional process and demanded the "immediate, safe, and unconditional return of the president to his constitutional role."

The Assembly instructed Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza to engage in "diplomacy aimed at restoring democracy and the Rule of Law and the restitution of President Jose Manuel...
