Defining Success: Reflections on the 50th Anniversary of the

ABA Forum on Construction Law

As the ABA Forum on Construction Law celebrates its 50th Anniversary, I find myself reflecting on a

deceptively simple question: What is success?

In our profession, success is often measured in billable hours, case victories, or profitable projects. These

benchmarks are important, but they do not tell the whole story—especially as we pause to commemorate

half a century of this Forum. When I think about success in the context of the Forum, I see something

broader, richer, and more enduring.

Success is measured in relationships. Fifty years ago, a group of construction lawyers came together

to build something bigger than themselves. They created a place where adversaries in the courtroom

could become colleagues in the classroom and where clients, experts, and lawyers could engage in open

dialogue. That sense of community remains the cornerstone of our Forum today.

Success is measured in learning. For five decades, the Forum has been the leading resource for education

in construction law. Our national meetings, publications, and programs have equipped generations of

practitioners with the tools to serve their clients and the industry with distinction. Success is found not

just in the knowledge we share, but in the culture of lifelong learning we’ve built together.

Success is measured in impact. The Forum has influenced the practice of construction law in ways that

extend far beyond our membership. From shaping contracts to addressing emerging technologies, from

advancing diversity to mentoring the next generation of lawyers, our collective work has left a mark on

the profession and the industry we serve.

And perhaps most importantly, success is measured in legacy. The true measure of an organization—or

of any leader—is not just what we accomplish in the moment, but what we leave behind. As we celebrate

our 50th year, we honor the vision and commitment of those who came before us, and we recommit

ourselves to ensuring that the Forum will continue to thrive for the next 50 years.

For me, success as Forum Chair is not defined by personal recognition. It is defined by whether we

strengthen the bonds of this community, whether we advance the practice of construction law, and

whether we inspire others to carry this Forum forward. If, years from now, our current members look

back and say, we were part of something meaningful that lasted, then we will have succeeded.

As we mark this milestone, let us celebrate our achievements with pride, but also look ahead with

purpose. Success is not a destination we reach once and for all—it is the ongoing journey of learning,

connecting, and building together. That journey, now 50 years strong, is the true success story of the ABA

Forum on Construction Law.
