Sean Lyons' "In Defense of the Corporation" ("Governance Perspectives," October 2009) is a great article. While sports analogies are too often used, most observers would agree that a team is only as successful as its defense. We also use the term prevent defense, which refers to a team that allows its opponent the freedom to move up the field (and use up the clock) but doesn't allow it to score. In the corporate world, this would be analogous to loose corporate ethics, which result in negative consequences (lawsuits) that have to be managed by legal counsel.
