* Issues surrounding the defense industrial base are many and well known. They include: reliance of foreign or single-source suppliers, obsolete parts and the decline of U.S. manufacturing capacity. This has lead to supply chain issues and serious questions as to whether industry has the ability to surge production in a time of conflict.

The Defense Department's industrial base policy office was established to tackle risk mitigation when it comes to these issues, but this GOA report indicates that it doesn't have much visibility into these problems despite a great deal of funding being applied to some of the more notable examples, such as shipyard capacity and semiconductor shortages.
