MAY 18 IS THE FIRST IN A SERIES OF DEADLINES for the registration of dot-bank domain names.

Below is a summary of the five steps involved in the registration process. Also included is a website where a bank can contain obtain additional information about the dot-bank registration process.

Dot-bank (.bank) is a trusted, verified, more secure and easily identifiable location on the Internet for the global banking community. This new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) will operate with numerous enhanced security requirements, including mandatory verification of eligibility, that exceeds those of most existing gTLDs.

Below are the five steps necessary for successful registration:

  1. Rights: May 18 is when members of the global banking community (that is, banks, savings associations, trade associations, select service providers and government regulators) that have registered their trademarks in the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN's)Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) may apply for an exact match of their mark. Be sure to check with the TMCH for the types of trademarks they accept at http://bit. ly/1AIlJvd. For organizations that have not registered their trademarks in the TMCH, domains can be registered during general availability, which begins June 24. To get the name you want, it's important to check now.

  2. Resources: Seek insight from across your organization's operations to help determine the best uses and functions for your new dot-bank domain. Form a working group of representatives from IT, HR, legal and marketing to give you a broad sense of the needs and possibilities. It's also possible your organization uses a third-party to host your website or domain name system resolution services. If so, add that external resource to your project team, so all technical aspects are considered.
