According to the American Express "Everyday Spending" Index, people expect to spend $15,210 this year on day-to-day and household expenses such as groceries, gasoline, fast food, and cellular and Internet services. This is similar to the amount reported in the 1999 survey ($14,917). In addition, the 2000 survey asked consumers about spending categories such as rent, car payments, property taxes, and other living expenses, and revealed that these costs totaled $19,232 for the year.

Rather than being caught off guard by their spending habits, nearly all respondents said they realize what they spend each month. Ninety-four percent of Americans balance their checkbooks at least once a month, 85% are aware of their current checking account balances, and 81% know the amount of their credit card balances. Additionally, 64% set a household budget for everyday expenses.

While the survey found that men and women share household financial management, roles vary. For example, while more women (72%) than men (52%) handle the bill-paying at home, more males (57%) than females (43%) make financial investment decisions.
