Retired Marine Lt. Gen. Carol A. Mutter, chair of the Defense Department Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, will be the guest speaker at the June fundraising event for HORIZONS, a Women In Defense Foundation.

The meeting will take place on June 17 at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway in Arlington, Va.

Mutter will discuss DACOWITS' role in the transformation of the Defense Department's personnel system. DACOWITS, whose membership includes 11 women and two men, promotes a fair, equitable and professional work environment where women are accepted and respected as equals.

The committee is examining long-term personnel trends in the department, using briefings, survey data and information gathered at focus group meetings. In 2003, it heard testimony from 580 people at 15 military installations throughout the United States and Europe.

Thus far this year, HORIZONS has awarded $48,965 in scholarships through its fundraising programs. Scholarships are awarded on a semi-annual basis.

Awards are made based on criteria set by the Foundation. Scholarships go to women who demonstrate financial need, strong academic achievement and a commitment to a career in national defense or national security. Recipients must have pursued studies in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, business, law, international relations, political science, operations research, and economics.

Completed applications are due in no later than July 1 for the following fall semester. Winners will be announced approximately six weeks afterwards.
