In just a couple of weeks, it will be time to pull out our collection of holiday shows to watch with the kids as we do every year. There's something about the comfort of a tradition that lets us share with our children the classics we watched when we were their ages. It's amazing how well they hold up today.

This year, we're adding a new title to the mix based on one of our very favorite kids' shows: Nick Jr's "Wonder Pets" It's one of those rare programs that, while clearly geared towards toddlers, is enjoyable for older children and adults as well. The show centers around three pets (a duck, turtle, and hamster) who live in a preschool and, every day after the students go home, receive a phone call--on a tin can and a string, no less--from an animal in distress. They fly around the world giving us tidbits about the penguins in Antarctica or the climate in Egypt, while they improvise a plan to rescue the lost, stranded, or endangered creature. The hook is that the episode is done almost entirely in song--kind of like an opera. It's clever and witty and sends the message that problems can be solved through teamwork and ingenuity.
