Crowley Maritime Corp. is building two double-hulled barges to serve Western Alaska from a homeport of Nome. The vessels are due to be delivered in April and May. The double-hull barges will be used for shallow-draft operations and beach landings for the delivery of fuel and cargo to remote communities in Western Alaska. Although there is no federal or State law requiring Crowley to use double hulls for barges less than 5,000 gross tons, the company believes the change is important.
