A. Determining one criminal transaction

A single criminal transaction is one episode so closely linked in time, place, and circumstances that it must be examined as one unitary whole. Cousins v. State, 277 Md. 383, 390-91 (1976). For most criminal offenses, the actus reus begins and ends during a discrete moment in time. Thus, for most offenses, each separate criminal transaction is a separate crime and separate count or charge. Id.
