A Crash Course
on U.S. Patent Law
Are you an inventor, law student, patent engineer, patent agent, or pat-
ent attorney? Great, keep reading; this book was designed for you. This
book is simply written in layman’s terms so that not only the expert
patent attorney but also the novice inventor can understand. I know
that there are numerous books on patent law in the market; this book
is by no means a substitute for them and should be read in conjunction
with them. Why read this book? It is the only book on the market that
provides concrete examples, including boilerplate language generated
from my patent experience that is not found on the Internet. I wish
I’d had a book like this when I first started my patent career. We will
start with an introduction on patent law. Next, we will talk about the
requirements for patentability: novelty and non-obviousness. Next, it
will be useful to focus on 101 patentability. Then we will discuss claim
drafting and prior art and prosecution history search, followed by the
contents of a provisional application and patent application or speci-
fication. We will then talk about responses to office actions or amend-
ments. Finally, it might be useful to dive into opinions, followed by the
conclusion.
