Restructured Young CPA activities kick off across Ohio: whether you have recently joined the profession or have a few years under your belt, taking advantage of The Ohio Society's Young CPA section is a great way to meet peers and Society leaders.

As the number of recent graduates entering the accounting profession continues to grow, The Ohio Society recognizes the need to appeal to and engage younger members as they enter the workforce.

In July 2008, the current Young CPA program underwent a rigorous restructuring designed to update the programs and enhance the value provided to the young CPAs who participate. This program--built for CPAs under the age of 35 and certified within the past seven years--began with the installation of 16 young members as the Young CPA Leadership Board. These enthusiastic members were tasked with laying the groundwork for a successful future for young CPAs throughout Ohio.

"There is a demand from this group, as well as their employers, for development," said Paul Weisinger, CPA, Walthall, Drake & Wallace, who currently chairs the Young CPA Leadership Board. "As chair, I feel grateful to work with so many people dedicated towards the goal of the program."

BOARD INITIATIVES INCLUDE:

* Supporting students at colleges and universities

* Guiding recent graduates to successful and fulfilling careers as CPAs

* Engaging young CPAs in various volunteer opportunities

To achieve these goals, the board formed regional planning committees throughout the state. These committees--in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Dayton--consist of 10-15 young professionals. Led by a chair, each group works to plan local events throughout the year.

"Being chair of the Cincinnati planning committee has expanded my network through interactions with committee members and at our events. It also has strengthened my leadership skills," said Sarah Heitker, CPA, Grant Thornton. "A lot of young professionals may think that 'extracurricular' activities end with college, but that is absolutely not true! Being part of an organization like this is extremely valuable and will only help advance your career."

Like many committee members, Heitker discovered the value that she can bring to this program and gained practical knowledge and leadership experience.
