As dangerous as running into a burning building is, it isn't what kills most firefighters. That would be cancer. Nationally, cancer--especially leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma--accounts for about 3 in 5 deaths in the line of duty. Recently enacted legislation in Massachusetts designates cancer a work-related injury for firefighters across the state. The new law, sponsored by Representative Daniel Cahill (D), covers all medical treatments for firefighters diagnosed with cancer along with time missed because of the illness.
