Corrigendum:
Community Dimensions of Smuggling:
The Case of Afghanistan and Somalia
Majidi, N. 2018. Community Dimensions of Smuggling: The Case of Afghanistan
and Somalia. The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social
Science 676 (1): 97–113. https://doi.org/10.1177/0002716217751895
The journal (The ANNALS), in collaboration with the author (Majidi), would like
to clarify the use of the word “dahabshiil” on pages 107 and 111 of the article.
Lacagta la dirayois the Somali term for “money transferand that term—not
“dahabshiil”—is the Somali term that generally refers to entities that facilitate
money transfers. Dahabshiil is the trade name of Dahabshiil Transfer Services
Limited, a multinational company that provides regulated money transfer ser-
vices. Dahabshiil is also a trademark, and its use is not synonymous with the
people or processes generally involved in money transfers in Somalia. To use the
term in such a way is incorrect.
The author and journal in no way intended to imply that Dahabshiil Transfer
Services Limited participates in informal money transfers among individuals who
are involved in human smuggling. The term as used in the article does not refer
to the company, Dahabshiil Transfer Services Limited, which is a highly regu-
lated institution; the largest money transfer service company in Africa; and the
provider of money transfer services in 126 countries worldwide, and in 40 African
countries, including Somalia.
