Kudos to Tom L. for his inspiring article ("Inside the Walls: Prisoners Are Stores of Human Potential," S/O 2018).

Since the Age of Enlightenment every country with pretensions of abandoning barbarism has concluded that justice is best served by rehabilitating lawbreakers rather than by punishing them. Why, then, does our nation still cling to the concept that justice can only be served by taking vengeance on the guilty?

If we are ever to become enlightened, we too should parole those prisoners who are no longer a threat to society and who, after all, are not the same persons who committed their transgressions...
