RENEGADE RAKES: University of Colorado-Boulder student Dave Kubicka worked at a summer snowboard camp on Oregon's Mount Hood in 2001, using an unwieldy asphalt rake to shape half-pipes. After returning to Boulder, Kubicka enlisted friend Kegan Paisley to build a better rake for the job. The pair garnered more than $17,000 in grants from the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance, the end result being the Renegade Rake, an aluminum and stainless steel tool designed for ease of use and comprehensive access to the terrain.
