Glover Nursery, based in West Jordan, offers tips for creating a colorful and flexible container garden.

First, pick a container that will fit your space and will be large enough for the plants. Keep in mind that large containers will be quite heavy when filled with soil--so assemble them where you want them to be. Terracotta and other unglazed ceramic pots will disintegrate over wet winters. Wooden and glazed ceramic pots are the best choice.

Select plants with a variety of textures, colors and heights. However make sure they all require the same amount of water and sun (full sun, partial sun or shade).

Fill the container about halfway 1 full of potting soil (not garden soil), leaving room for the plants. Mix in a time-released fertilizer and plan to supplement with a water-soluble fertilizer every few weeks.
