Conclusion
Last Thoughts on Public Speaking
Make no mistake about it: Being a good public speaker is not easy.
To do the job properly, it takes organization, discipline, a flexible
mind, a positive outlook, and the ability to think on your feet. You have
to have poise, diction, confidence, brains, and ability. And it doesn’t hurt
to plaster a big, fat smile on your face every once in a while, either.
But even saying all of that, public speaking is a skill that can be mas-
tered by most anyone.
In the preceding chapters, I have shared with you the advice that I have
been able to assemble over the course of my career coaching and working
with attorneys, executives, and politicians at every stage of their careers.
I have seen attorneys struggle to prepare for their first cases in court.
I have witnessed seasoned CEOs who have had the guts to admit that they
could still improve their skills go back to the drawing board and start from
scratch. And I have seen fumbling politicians rise to the occasion and
motivate an apathetic audience.
But my favorite moments over the years have been watching those
who were afraid of speaking before a crowd overcome those fears and
discover that they had it within themselves to become more powerful and
persuasive speakers.
These moments make it all worthwhile.
I sincerely hope that you will use the tools I have provided for you in
these chapters to become the successful public speaker you wish to become.
You may not believe that you have it in you, but let me make you this as-
surance: If you remember AMI,
TM
if you meet the needs of your Audience,
and craft a careful and organized Message, and if you develop an interesting
and dynamic Image and Delivery style, you are guaranteed to improve.
Never forget that public speaking is a skill. And skills can be learned—
by anyone.
After that, the possibilities—as the saying goes—are endless.
Best of luck!
