American, US Air add surcharges in wake of EU law. American Airlines and US Airways Group have joined other big U.S. carriers in adding surcharges to flights in the wake of a disputed European law requiring airlines to pay for aircraft emissions. Representatives of the two U.S. airlines confirmed on Friday that both have matched a USD3 surcharge each way unveiled by Delta Air Lines Inc on fares purchased in the United States for flights between the United States and Europe. The move would help offset the cost of the European Union carbon emissions law that took effect on January 1. United Continental Holdings also said this week it has matched that charge. Under the law, airlines touching down or taking off in the European Union and three neighboring nations must acquire permits for the carbon they emit. The measure has drawn opposition from the United States, China and others. Some industry watchers have said airfares between the United States and Europe could rise as much as USD90 as carriers look to pass along the expense to passengers. Germany's Lufthansa has also told passengers to expect higher fares. Jan 6, 2012

US Airways Employees Deliver Outstanding Operations for Customers. Travelers flying on US Airways between October and December 2011 were treated to the airline's best-ever fourth quarter operational performance. In addition, US Airways finished the year with an outstanding operational performance, including the Company's best December in on-time, completion factor, baggage handling and departure performance during the busy holiday travel season. Several factors contributed to the performance, including extensive planning for heavier-than-usual numbers of passengers, a focus on making sure flights departed on time, good weather, and, most notably, a "can-do" attitude from the airline's employees, who took care of more than two million customers who flew with US Airways between Dec. 22 and Jan. 1 . "Our performance during the often-challenging holiday travel season helped to make the holidays joyful and stress-free for more than two million people who traveled with us during this time," said US Airways' Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Robert Isom . "Such an accomplishment would not have been possible without the hard work of all 32,000 US Airways employees or the support from our Express partners, which ran equally impressive operations that beat previous seasons."
