The ABA’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section

(TIPS) Self-Insurers and Risk Managers Committee

(SIRM) dissects all aspects of self-insurance, risk

management, risk retention groups, and captive insurance.

A person need only be interested in best practices and legal

parameters and have an overarching interest in risk manage-

ment to be a member.

Risk management is not just about insurance. It is also

about identifying and assessing clients’ risk prof‌iles and

helping them implement best practices to reduce the liability

exposures that organizations face, irrespective of whether

such exposures exist within the contracts that clients use or

the mechanisms of client operations. With that in mind,

SIRM can also tap into its network of nonlegal professionals

to provide added “boots on the ground” perspectives. Such

experience only enhances SIRM members’ knowledge base.

As traditional insurance sees premiums annually increase

above the rate of inf‌lation, as deductibles rise and coverages

shrink, and even as insurers withdraw from the market in

certain high-risk areas, attorneys need to have a working

knowledge of how self-insurance and captive ownership can

work within clients’ risk management capabilities. For man-

aging liability risks, understanding, structur ing, and utilizing

indemnity agreements and contractual insurance requirements

can also be critical to minimizing direct f‌inancial exposure.

Without a doubt, the membership within SIRM consists of

thought leaders within these growing areas of the law.

SIRM meets quarterly via Zoom conferences. For each

quarterly meeting, the group invites a subject matter expert

to speak for 15–20 minutes on a topic of interest. In addi-

tion to the educational aspects of these meetings, they are

great ways to expand one’s national professional network.

SIRM also publishes a newsletter where it highlights the

newsletter builds professional credibility for any attorney

seeking to enhance their credentials within the greater TIPS

universe. With that in mind, SIRM also encourages its mem-

bers to prepare long-form, legal articles for TIPS’s The Brief

magazine, a glossy, quar terly publication with excellent pres-
