Comment from the
Editors
When Terpstra and van Wijck’s original article, “The Influence of Police
Treatment and Decision-making on Perceptions of Procedural Justice: A
Field Study”, was published online in 2021, Rick Trinkner sent us corre-
spondence asking whether he could offer a comment on aspects of it. In con-
versations with him and several members from the Journal of Research in
Crime and Delinquency (JRCD) editorial board, we came to believe that a
comment had the potential to consider broader questions regarding the
study of procedural justice. Trinkner’s comment, which underwent peer
review, is not about any alleged mistake or problem in Terpstra and van
Wijck’s study. Instead, it represents a comment on measurement designed
to promote intellectual exchange, in the spirit of peer review, among
researchers from different original disciplines. In our view, scholars
asking questions and identifying challenges offers the chance for theoretical
and empirical development in criminology, which is a major part of JRCD’s
mission. We believe the original article and comment can stimulate conver-
sation about how to reconcile prior work and plot future research. We appre-
ciate Terpsta and van Wijck for their willingness to write a response to the
comment and their patience throughout the process. We also are grateful for
the critical, but respectful, note by Trinkner and the helpful and timely feed-
back by JRCD editorial board members.
