Your recent articles on energy bring up the issue of the global warming crisis. With the absence of federal action on this issue, state-level legislation is necessary to not only protect a state's environment and economy, but also to secure a competitive edge in the new, multi-billion dollar "green" economy.

Recently, the Massachusetts legislature has made strides to secure sound, yet bold, legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and do our part to fight global climate change.

In March 2008 the Massachusetts Senate passed the Global Warming Solutions Act, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the commonwealth's economy and environment from the negative impacts of global warming and climate change.

The bill would require a cap on greenhouse gas emissions from all sources and would establish a framework that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050, based on 1990 levels.
