CLF HAS DEVELOPED AN INNOVATIVE strategy for continuing its fight to restore New England's depleted cod and other groundfish populations. Together with World Wildlife Fund-Canada (WWF), CLF has identified "Habitat Areas of Particular Concern" that are home to large concentrations of young fish from eight struggling, overfished species. The groups are calling on the New England Fishery Management Council to protect these areas. Ocean floor habitats necessary for the survival of juvenile fish are particularly vulnerable to impacts of fishing gear and other equipment that disrupts the sea bottom. The healthy growth and development of juvenile fish is essential to rebuilding a sustainable commercial fishery and a healthy ecosystem.
