THE TRANSPORTATION SECTOR is one of the largest --and fastest growing--sources of air pollution in the Northeast. Tailpipe emissions account for 30 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions in the region--well above the national average. They also account for a third of all ground-level ozone-forming pollutants that can cause permanent lung damage, and 75 to 90 percent of 4 carcinogenic air toxins. Unless we change our habits soon, it will get far worse.

CLF is working hard to help solve the problem by pushing for the adoption of California's Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) standards in all New England states, New York and New Jersey. The standards would require that 10 percent of all new cars sold after 2005-2009, depending on the state, be ZEV vehicles.
