CLF IS PUSHING the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure better implementation of a new program aimed at cleaning up stormwater discharges from municipal storm sewer systems. Stormwater is a chronic pollution problem threatening the health of water bodies throughout New England, including New Hampshire's unique and fragile Great Bay estuary. When rain falls on impervious surfaces such as roads, parking lots and rooftops, it picks up and transports hazardous pollutants into surface waters. Polluted runoff endangers public health by contaminating drinking water sources and causing bacterial pollution that leads to shellfish bed and beach closures.
