On April 2, by a 5-4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court, in its McCutcheon v. FEC decision, struck down limits on the total amount an individual can give to candidates and political parties, allowing a small handful of billionaires and multimillionaires to pour even more money into elections. Justice Stephen Breyer wrote a blistering dissent. He said that the McCutcheon decision, taken together with the 2010 Citizens United ruling, "eviscerates our nation's campaign finance laws, leaving a remnant incapable of dealing with the grave problems of democratic legitimacy that those laws were intended to resolve."
