With the giving season reminding us to be selfless and tens of millions of our fellow Americans suffering from poverty, homelessness, and hunger, the personal finance website WalletHub has issued a report on the Cities with the Highest and Lowest Populations in Need.

WalletHub's analysts compared the 150 most-populated U.S. cities across 16 key metrics to determine where Americans are most economically disadvantaged. The data set ranges from poverty rate to food-insecurity rate to percentage of maltreated people.

Cities with the lowest populations in need are Fremont, Calif.; Huntington Beach, Calif.; Irvine Calif.; Overland Park, Kan.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; Pembroke Pines, Fla.; Gilbert, Ariz.; San Jose, Calif.; and Virginia Beach, Va. Cities with the highest populations in need, from the bottom up, are Detroit, Mich.; Atlanta, Ga.; Cleveland, Ohio; Memphis, Tenn.; New Orleans, La.; Jackson, Miss.; Augusta, Ga.; Brownsville, Texas; Birmingham, Ala.; and Richmond, Va.
