On April 15, Chinese president Hu Jintao gave the "keynote" speech at the opening of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA). Regarded as the Asian analog to Davos, BFA was founded by 26 Australasian states in 2001 and is permanently headquartered in Boao, Hainan, China.

Hu's speech hit three major topics: paeans to strength and progress of Asian states; next steps for Asian development; and the progress, promise, and peaceful commitments of China.

Thus, Asian achievements are the result of the persistent efforts of the industrious and talented Asian people who have "an innovative spirit of breaking new ground," learn from others, willingly cooperate, and help those in distress. These traditions should be "cherished and carried forward."

Asians, said Hu, need to:

--respect diversity of civilizations and promote good-neighborly relations;

--transform the development pattern and promote all-round development;

--share development opportunities and meet challenges together;

--reject Cold War mentality, advocate a new...
