CHARLOTTE -- The Carlyle Group, a Washington, D.C.-based private-equity company, sold Horizon Lines shipping company to Castle Harlan, a New York private-equity company, for $650 million. Horizon, the nation's largest ocean-transportation company, employs 75 at its headquarters here.

CONCORD -- Hendrick Cos., the parent of car-dealership magnate Rick Hendrick's NASCAR operations, plans to move its headquarters here from Charlotte by the end of the year. The move will consolidate 70 employees from Charlotte and Cabarrus County. The company will add up to 12 employees.

GROVER -- Mayflower Vehicle Systems, part of British truck maker Mayflower, added 45 jobs here. The plant, which makes cabs for Mack Trucks, now employs 198.

HUNTERSVILLE -- Atlanta-based Newell Rubbermaid has moved the headquarters of its food-service division here from Wooster, Ohio, bringing 100 administrative and professional jobs with an average annual salary of $67,900. The company, which also has an industrial-tool subsidiary and a sales division here, employs 550 in North Carolina.

HIGH SHOALS -- UCS Spirit, a maker of gymnastic mats, soccer goals and other sports equipment, will move its headquarters here from Kearny, N.J., by the end of the year. The company will employ about 65 and plans to increase that to 100 within two years.

LINCOLNTON -- Doug Herbert Racing has moved from Cherryville to a former textile mill here. The company, which includes Herbert's drag-racing team, a screen-printing business and an auto-parts business, employs 50.

KANNAPOLIS -- Winston-Salem-based health system Novant Health, which owns Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, plans to open a distribution center here in November. It will employ 45 and provide medical supplies and equipment to Presbyterian and to Novant hospitals in Winston-Salem and Thomasville.

CHARLOTTE -- Bank of America is cutting 117 jobs from its wire-transfer unit. It's part of BofA's plan to trim 12,500 jobs within two years of its merger with FleetBoston. The wire-transfer layoffs began in June and will be completed by the end of the year.

CHARLOTTE -- Nucor agreed to buy a steel mill in Tuscaloosa, Ala., from Corus Tuscaloosa, part of London-based steel maker Corus, for $90 million. The mill makes steel coil and plates.
