§6.8STRATEGIC AND PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

All attorneys should understand how time is computed under CR 6(a) so that the correct dates and deadlines are noted. It is helpful to make sure that legal assistants or secretaries or others on the lawyer's staff are monitoring deadlines carefully. A protocol for doing so is also helpful and decreases the chance of mistake.

Local rules always should be consulted. Both CR 6(b) and (d) allow motions to enlarge or shorten time without notice to the other party. Although available without limitation in CR 6(b) and with the requirement of "cause shown" in CR 6(d), ex parte applications to the court should be made with caution.
