§50.1INTRODUCTION

CR 50 governs motions for judgment as a matter of law in cases tried to a jury. The rule does not apply in nonjury cases. Under CR 50, a court may remove an issue from the jury's purview only when there is not a legally sufficient evidentiary basis for the jury to find for the nonmoving party on that issue. The rule evolved as an effort to clarify the court's duty to apply rules of law while reserving resolution of genuine, material factual disputes for the jury.
