§ 5.5 • CONCLUSION

Without a doubt, relocation cases are some of the hardest cases that parents, lawyers, and judges face. No matter who wins, in some respects, the entire family unit loses. The conflict that is created by a relocation cannot be undone, yet many parents feel that they have no choice but to move, either for financial reasons, personal reasons, or to escape a high-conflict or even dangerous situation with the other parent.

Ultimately, Colorado has done a good job of establishing clear legal standards, whether in the pre-decree or post-decree context, for determining relocation cases. These standards need to be followed, without any attempt to insert blame or penalize the relocating parent for his or her decision. There...
